Andra Kirkaldy

Cup Winners

Congratulations to the Windyhill Past Captains Team of Michael McKeown, Ian Thomson, Maurice Shields, Frank Geary, Roy McMurray [Team Convenor], Raymond Lowe, John Britton, Tom Rae and Scott Cochrane, winners of the 2017 Andra Kirkaldy Cup.

The postponed final against Hilton Park G C was played today at Milngavie G C, with Windyhill winning all four matches.

This is the fifth time a Windyhill Team has won this trophy, with previous teams being victorious in 1987, 1990, 1993 and 2001.

Andra Kirkaldy Cup

The Andra Kirkaldy Cup is played between teams of Past Captains of golf clubs which participate in the various competitions organised by the Donald Cameron League.

Windyhill Teams have won the Andra Kirkaldy Cup in 1987, 1990, 1993, 2001 and now 2017.

This particular trophy has been contested on an annual basis since 1985 and commemorates the achievements of Andrew Kirkaldy, a Fife golfer who played in 23 Open Championships between 1879 and 1910.

Andrew came second in the Open on three occasions and featured in the top-10 fourteen times.

Annual General Meeting

TONIGHT

The AGM will be held in the clubhouse at 7.30pm on Tuesday 27th February.

The agenda will be emailed to members on Tuesday 20th.

Hard copies of the agenda booklet will be available from the club office from that date.

The Minutes of the 108th AGM, held on Tuesday 27th February 2017, can be viewed in the Members' Section of the website.

Defibrillator

Through the generosity of Windyhill members, and with the support of the Hodgkinson Trust, a defibrillator has now been installed in the clubhouse.

It is located at the end of the main corridor, close to the main door of the clubhouse.

This medical device is designed to be used in conjunction with the application of CPR to an individual who has collapsed and is not breathing. There is no need for any medical training to be able to use the defibrillator as clear instructions on what to do are provided by a built in voice recording.

Some members may be familiar with its use through health and safety training they may have received at their place of work. Several of the Executive Board attended a training course on the defibrillator run by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

While it is hoped that there may never be any occasion to use the defibrillator, its presence at the club does provide some reassurance.

Prize Winners

The Windyhill Seniors Team won the Donald Cameron League Senior Trophy for 2017 and it was presented at the DCL Annual Dinner, held at Hayston Golf Club on 2nd February 2018.

Club Captain Douglas Gibson, McIntyre League Convenor Rodger Black and winning Team Member Roger McHugh were in attendance at the event to receive the trophy.

Practice Nets

The two Practice Nets which the club purchased with the assistance of the National Lottery Awards for All Scheme have now been put in place by the hard work of Windyhill's green keeping team.

The next part of the project is to place covered bays at the other end of the practice area.

New Equipment

The photograph shows the new equipment being used by Darren and his green keeping team to ensure that the excellent conditions expected at Windyhill are being maintained.

The Kubota tractor was purchased in September 2016 and is used for the heavy work of cutting the grass in the rough. The Toro machine, also purchased in September, cuts the fairway grass and produces the shaped designs so often visible on many of Windyhill's fairways.

Of particular interest are the other two items of machinery. The aerator rollers will the used on the greens and the long, pruning cutter will permit the safe removal of branches from trees. These two machines were part of the club's recent successful application for a grant from the National Lottery.

Position indicator flags have now been purchased and attached to the flagpoles on each hole.

They provide approximate information on whether the hole is cut at the rear, middle, side or front of a green.

A magnificent 3 and 1 victory in the final at Royal Aberdeen for Windyhill's five times Club Champion, George Duncan.

Windyhill & James Braid

The latest edition of Scottish Club Golfer features an article on James Braid which includes a mention of Windyhill - it's on page 57.
Issue 77 also contains an image of the scorecard which records the scores of James Braid, Harry Vardon, J.H.Taylor and Sandy Herd from the Exhibition Match they played to mark the opening of Canniesburn Golf Club, the earlier incarnation of Windyhill, on 16th April 1910.

Buggies

Due to the popularity and success of the introduction of buggies to Windyhill over the past two seasons, the club has decided to purchase its own instead of entering into a rental agreement.
The plan is to source and buy petrol driven buggies which can be serviced in-house.
The first of the buggies was delivered last Saturday and, by the end of April, there will be four buggies available.

WINTER GOLF

Fairway mats are now in play on the fairways.
Alternatively, golfers may place their ball one yard into the rough and play from there.
This measure is designed to protect the course over the winter and allow quicker recovery for next season.
